When the electro-acoustic movement began to gain momentum in the decade following WWII, one of the most significant changes in music history took place: henceforth, any sound was a potential musical element, whether it be produced by a musical instrument or by the passage of a garbage truck in a bustling street. This change brought upon the necessity for a terminological system that would allow for the understanding, description and analysis of music that is neither represented with traditional notation nor characterized by rhythm and pitch.

The course is concerned with this terminological world, which developed (and is still developing) alongside of the electro-acoustic movement. Throughout the course, the participants will gain a deeper understanding of works from the end of the 20th and beginning 21st centuries, as well as acquire the tools necessary to analyze other repertoire from this period. At the end of the course, these tools will be implemented in order to analyze music from the baroque, classical and romantic periods.
