This is an introductory course outlining the history of opera from the 17th century up to the present. In the course we will discuss theoretical cultural, aesthetic and theatrical issues related to the changing face of the medium of opera. Among the topics to be dealt with are the relationship of text to music, voice and drama, singing and orchestaration
We will focus on representative works by central composers: such as Monteverrsi, Gluck, Mozart, Bellini, Verdi, Puccini, Wagner, Britten and Berio
