What is music analysis? What does it aim to describe or explain? Which

 questions does it address? What tools are used to address these questions?

 This introductory course explores these issues through analyses of selected| pieces from the Classic and early Romantic periods, presenting basic concepts and basic skills pertaining to the analysis of tonal music. Topics include: basic harmonic progressions and functions, phrasing and phrase structure, the motif and its development, and small forms.
