Course description
The course will focus on the so-called prosaic accents of the Hebrew Bible, their syntax and interpretation. Both the modern scholarly controversy on the nature of the accents and the traditional Jewish cantillation of the accents will be studied. The latter will be represented by the Ashkenazi cantillation (for the melodic type) and the Yemenite cantillation (for the metric type). The participants will be required to learn the prosaic accents and the patterns of their combination, to be aware of the various reading traditions and to master at least one type of the traditional vocal cantillation.
