Course description
An examination of the life and music of some of our major composers, through their letters and correspondence. Their writings enlighten us to the stories behind their music, their process, historical background and their wonderful personalities. Composers to be studied include Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn, Johannes Brahms, Frederic Chopin, Hector Berlioz, Gustav Mahler, George Gershwin, Samuel Barber and Leonard Bernstein. Students will be asked to do reading, and will be guided through the literature and music through analysis of both. There will be listening, live performance and a class presentation.
