Course description

This course is dedicated to the modern Christian art of the Holy Land. It will focus on the visual aspects of the cult of the various Christian communities that exist today in the Holy Land. We will analyze architectural structures, architectural decoration, painting, sculpture and minor arts. We will learn to apply the research methodology (generally accepted in the study of medieval and Renaissance art) to the interpretation of the contemporary religious visual language. There is no doubt that the modern Christian art of the Holy Land lies on the seam between the conservative tradition and the current situation, between a suspicion of change and the desire for bold renewal, between internationalism and a localism which sometimes borders on nationalism. We will try to understand what makes this art an integral part of the general history of art, while at the same time making it different from any other modern art in the world. The course includes obligatory reading in English.
