Course description

The majority of medieval art works were not intended to be displayed on their own. They were made as part of the church’s fabric, or played a role at the court, in the liturgical service or devotional practice. How then should the medieval artifact be displayed in the modern museum? During this course we shall examine some of the world’s largest collections of medieval art and consider certain major exhibitions, including their catalogues and reviews. An exceptional visit of Pierre-Yves Le Pogam, Chief curator and conservator of the sculpture collection at the Louvre Museum, will allow us to examine the particular considerations of the curator of the medieval collection. Prof. Le Pogam, one of leading curators and conservators in this field today, will conduct a series of meetings in one week during the semester, allowing us to examine the medieval collection at the Louvre while taking into consideration the particular challenges it presents.
