The course will examine historical-biographical art cycles of the 15th through 16th centuries in Italy, which include secular and religious subjects, in whatever medium.
At first, Renaissance secular history cycles were intended merely to glorify an individual and his achievements, while religious cycles depicted lives of saints. Towards the beginning of the 16th century, they began to be used as propaganda devices – glorification as a means to an end. The course attempts the examination of historical cycles, in order to show how widespread it became, and why.
