Between the crisis of reason and the logocentric critique, this class will focus on the role of the senses in creating and experiencing art and its conceptualization and historicity in the modern era. How may we listen to art history? How may we taste or smell artworks? And should the history of art, traditionally tamed to focus and sharpen its critical gaze turn to different, “other” senses to perceive its objects? To follow these trajectories we will examine the senses as organizing principles of experience, meaning, narrations, and critique.
