Many critics of contemporary art have pointed at the historical turn as the central trend in the art world at recent decades. According to this approach, it is evident that the artistic discussion in contemporary reality is no longer about futuristic utopias but rather the past. The past, they argue, is the only place where we can continue to explore and discover. The appearance of the historical turn in the Israeli art is unique since it accompanies the stormy debates in Israeli society over controversial historical narratives. In this seminar, we will explore the different ways in which contemporary Israeli artists deal with questions regarding Israeli history and memory and how they challenge the politics of Israeli identities.
