This class is a survey on the formation of Israeli art in the last hundred years; with focus on painting, sculpture and photography created in Israel by Israeli artists. In addition to the introduction of major art movements, artists and central exhibitions, we will emphasize specific issues that characterize the relations between the Place and the Art within in it: local history and geo-politics, constructions of ideology and identity, and influences from abroad. Therefore, we will follow closely the chronology of changes and developments in the local art field from the end of the 19th century until 1970s. Our last meetings will be dedicated to contemporary Israeli artists, while focusing on key trends and topics, which have been further elaborated in the last three decades such as: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Holocaust memory, identity politics, environment, and globalization.
