Course description

This class is a survey on the formation of Israeli art in the last hundred years; focus on painting, sculpture and photography created in Israel by Israeli artists. In addition to the introduction to major art movements, artists and central exhibitions, we will emphasis on specific issues that characterize the relation between the Place and the Art in it: local history and geo-politic, construction of ideology and identity, and influences from the outside. Therefore, we will follow closely the chronology of changes and developments in the local art field from the end of the 19th century until 1970s. Our last meetings will be dedicating to contemporary Israeli artists, while focus on key trends and topics, which have been extended in the last three decades: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Holocaust memory, identity politic, environment, and globalization.
