The course will focus on the dramatic changes that underwent the art in Florence and Rome from the year 1492, when Lorenzo the magnificent died. In the century commonly labeled the cinquecento art shifted from what used to be coined as “High Renaissance” to “Roman Baroque”.
During the course we will try to thoroughly examine the artistic, political and religious changes Rome underwent in those years and to analyze some central works of art in correlation with the general historical context. In parallel, we would ask questions about style, artistic identity, and the capacity of one artist to form or influence the art of his times.
