Course description

Who are the Greek and Roman gods and heroes, what do we know about their cults, what can be learned from the relationships between myth and religion, what role did myths play in the lives of the ancient Greeks and Romans, and what can be deduced from the written sources – all these comprise one aspect of this course. A second aspect concerns the visual representations, their development, and their patrons’ intentions in preferring one cycle to another as suitable to decorate the walls of their triclinia and atria, etc. An additional aspect to which the course will relate refers to the meanings of the same subject in the different periods, and why certain subjects and images were so lavishly adopted by later periods, such as in the Renaissance, Baroque and modern times, while others were totally ignored.
