Course description
Since Aristotle's Poetics, Sophocles' Oedipus Tyrannus is considered the epitome of all dramatic writing in Western Theatre and Culture. Oedipus' quest to understand his violent fate has become the idiom of tragedy and the tragic, as well as the reception of the Ancient Greek drama and philosophy in the Modern world. In this seminar we will read Sophocles' Oedipus Tyrannus again with the aid of Philosophers, Psychoanalysts, Historians and Researches of Cultures and will follow the influence of these readings on 20th century Art and Performance.
