Course description
In a multi-disciplinary academic world, saturated with methods, theories and ideologies, those studying and practicing theater also have a vital, pressing need to familiarize themselves with the principles of leading trends of thought in contemporary research discourse. In addition to this need for this general knowledge, research is never conducted in a vacuum and is largely dependent on a theoretical point of view. To this end, the course offers a concise presentation of central theoretical approaches since the beginning of the 20th century – applied to theater in research and deed. The course will focus on linguistic and counter-linguistic approaches, functioning as a contemporary ground to performance analysis: Semiotics, Phenomenology and Post-structuralism. The approaches will be demonstrated and the critical gaze will also be turned on theory itself.
