The term postmodernism reflects a paradigmatic turn in western philosophy, cultural practices and art. How did this turn influence the theatre? In what way manifestations of postmodern theatre differ from modern ones? We will discuss some pivotal terms pertinent to postmodern thought and practice – such as deconstruction, parody, rhizome, simulacra, intertextuality and performance – and will look into their application in late twentieth century theatre. A special discussion will be devoted to the term post-dramatic theatre and the question of representation.
