Course description

Richard Schechner diagnoses three significant shifts in the modern practice of acting: “from naturalism to alienation effect to auto-performance.”  This course will look into the development of the art of acting in western theatre, focusing on the intricate relations between self and character. It will also consider the major shift taking place in performance practice in the second half of the twentieth century, that is the emphasis given to the performer’s self.
