Course description

The course will undertake a critical exploration of those forms of theatre that are associated with the avant garde. The term "avant garde" refers to people and practices that are experimental or novel particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics.

The notion of the avant-garde is considered to be the hallmark of modernism and is characterized by an extension of the boundaries  beyond that which is accepted as the norm primarily in the cultural realm. Analysis of the avant-garde theatre will be carried out from within the cultural framework of modernity, while emphasizing the relationships between theatre and the other arts.
