Course description
The term "in-yer-face theatre" was coined by Aleks Sierz to describe a new wave of provocative theatre that emerged in England in the 1990s. In-yer-face theatre deals with pressing social issues by employing uncompromising, unpleasant language and imagery; its purpose is to shock the audience. The purpose of this course is to get acquainted with the major manifestations of this trend, such as the drama of Sarah Kane and Mark Ravenhill, explore their rhetoric and read them in their socio-cultural context. In addition, we will consider other expressions of in-yer-face, confrontational performance, such as the work of Franko B and DV8 Physical Theatre.
