Course description

The seminar will discuss the relation of aesthetics to ethics and the unconscious and will emerge from a viewpoint that the philosopher Elaine Scarry represents. We will examine representations of the relationship of the unconscious and the sublime using interpretations of painting and photography and watching films. From Michael Fried we will learn how the viewer is related to the art object according to the philosophy of the everyday. From Rosalind Krauss we will learn about the Optical Unconscious.
