Course description
The aim of the course is to provide understanding of basic concepts of the most prevalent psychological disorders among school children. The course will examine the boundaries between normal distress and mental disorder, and will focus on some of the most prevalent diagnoses, comorbidities, and differential diagnosis among school children. For each disorder, various theoretical approaches, key concepts, supporting empirical findings and prominent controversies will be discussed. The course will cover disorders such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorders, mood disorders, suicide and self-harming behaviors, and substance abuse. Overarching issues such as over-diagnosis and over-treatment in childhood and adolescence will be discussed.
