Course description
The course will focus on Rousseau’s and Marx’s analyses of the roots of inequality in society and the political and ideological mechanisms that make class societies possible. We will also discuss the possibilities for human liberation offered by those philosophers. Course readings will include passages from the following texts: “Discourse on the Origin and Basis of Inequality among Men” and The Social Contract by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels.
