Course description
How do we understand our interlocutors? How do they understand us? Does discourse develop according to guidelines? And if so, what are those guidelines? What are the cognitive abilities that are involved in understanding others during discourse? What are the linguistic abilities that allow us to express this understanding?
During the seminar we will discuss these questions and their importance to the understanding of normal linguistic developmental and that of autistic and brain damaged patients. We will review studies that combine pragmatic analysis and empirical research.
The student's research projects will consider questions regarding the cognitive abilities that allow understanding others and the linguistic expression of that understanding.
