Course description

Policy packaging for sustainable transport

Despite the recognition of the need for sustainable transport system, and the need to move towards low-carbon mobility, the transport sector remains almost the only one that cannot curb emissions. At the centre of the new planning policy to create healthy and sustainable cities are the non-motorised modes of transport (mainly walking and cycling) that have seen significant decline in their use over the years, alongside public transport, that in most cases “loses” in the competition with the private car.

The aim of this course is to create a policy package that could bring about significant modal shift to non-motorised modes and public transport in cities, and change in mobility patterns. The methodology of “policy packaging”, which is still at an early stages of research and development, will be at the centre of the course and will be applied by students in a project that will be chosen at the start of the year in collaboration with a local authority or transport operator. The aim of the course is to present at the end a policy package to promote sustainable transport.
