Course description
Revolution in the Making: The Hebrew Bible in the Light of the Dead Sea Scrolls
The methodological seminar of the Bible Program for 2015 is devoted to exploring ways by which the discovery of the Dead Sea scrolls (DSS) can impact the study of the Hebrew Bible. While some aspects of biblical studies were profoundly transformed by DSS research (such as textual criticism and Hebrew philology), other aspects—relating particularly to the literary-historical and compositional issues—were hardly affected and are still being discussed along lines established long before the DSS were unearthed. We will review various genres that are represented in both biblical literature and the Qumran writings (such as narratives, poetry, prophecy, law, etc.) and ask how and to what extent the new data changes old positions and scholarly approaches.
