Course description
Enlightenment and Disillusionment in the Bible
The Bible includes many narratives in which the characters experience enlightenment following an extreme event. Such are for instance, God's angel, who after the sacrifice of Isaac understands that Abraham is a true believer; the widow from Zarephath, who understands that Elijah is a true messenger of God, after Elijah revives her dead son. Not always do enlightenment and disillusionment follow a single significant event in the life of the hero, but rather they appear as a result of a long process of suffering and learning, which may take a lifetime. The second type of enlightenments may be attributed to Joseph and Job (even though the latter is not categorized as narrative). This seminar deals with a possible genre of enlightenment narratives, with their common plot constituents, with types of enlightenments, and character analysis. Similar narratives outside the Bible shall also be mentioned (the Epic of Gilgamesh, and the Odyssey).
