Course description
Gender and Magic in Second Temple Period
Based on the Biblical Verse “Thou shall not allow a witch to life” the Rabbis ask, why the prohibition takes up the female language. There answer is, that women are familiar with witchcraft. This kind of demonizing the female gender is absent from the biblical sources. The class will engage in literature from the Second Temple times (non-canonical, Qumran scrolls etc.) to see whether and if so to what degree the rabbinic stand is prepared by that literature and what might be the motives for this.
