Within the context of patriarchal society, women depend on men in all respects. As a result, love in such a society is based on a relationship between an omnipotent person and a helpless person. The course will explore the social and cultural meaning of the literary representation of love in biblical narratives, against the background of power-relations between the sexes in the biblical, patriarchal society, while utilizing a distinction between three groups: (a) the love of men to women: Jacob and Rachel, Samson and Delilah , Shechem and Dinah, Amnon and Tamar; (b) the love of women to men: Michal and David, Leah and Jacob, the beloved woman of Canticles and the tempting woman of Proverbs; (c) the love between men, identified with the concept of warriors’ brotherhood and loyalty: David and Jonathan, David and Ittai the Gittite.
