Course description
The Representations of female figures in the Bible: Strange Woman, Wise Woman and Queens
In Biblical literature, male characters occupy centre stage, while women are situated at the margins of the story. In this course we will examine representations of women in the Bible from a literary point of view. We will offer a feminist reading in order to discuss the political and ideological motives which stand at the basis of the characterisation of women in the Bible. We will demonstrate our point of view by discussing several representations of women, such as the 'foreign woman', the 'seductive woman' , the prostitute, the 'wise woman' , and the highest social standing possible for a woman to achieve in the ancient Near East -- the queen and queen-mother.
