Course description


The seminar deals with the study of the history of emotions, with an emphasis of the issue of the representation of emotion in Indian philosophy and literature. During the seminar we will examine several case studies – from the epics to early modernity – in light of contemporary discussions in the extent to which emotions are culturally and socially structured, in their political and religious function, and their role in the creation of subjectivity.
