Course description
Tantric Buddhism

The Tantric movement that originated in India around the middle of the first millennium CE, had had a tremendous impact on Asian civilization at large. Tantric Buddhism (also known as Esoteric Buddhism) crossed the boundaries between Hinduism and Buddhism, influencing all forms of Indian religion and culture. The Tantric movement became the dominant form of Buddhism in Tibet, and it exerted great influence on China as well as Japan (where it was institutionalized in the form of the Shingon and Tendai Buddhist sects). This seminar we will examine the impact of Tantric Buddhism on the civilizations of India, Tibet, China, and Japan. The seminar will employ a wide range of materials including Buddhist scriptures and works of visual art.
