The lives of almost one billion people living today in India and beyond are to a large extent shaped by Hinduism. While early studies focused on the philosophy, theology and textual aspects of this religion, recently the lived, everyday and popular sides of it have come to the fore. This course explores various sides of contemporary Hinduism and how it is intertwined within society, politics, economy and even environment in India and beyond. Doing so, issues such as possession, pilgrimage and tourism, caste and gender, ecology, festivals and society, and others, will be discussed and analyzed.
