This course will survey the principal Chinese religious traditions: Daoism, Buddhism, and the amorphous popular religion. We will examine the quest for salvation in each of these traditions as well as their rich pantheon of divinities. We will investigate the relation between the Chinese supernatural and the Chinese socio-political order, as well as the role of novels in shaping the Chinese conceptions of the divine.
