Course description
The seminar deals with the career and work of the British playwright Harold Pinter, laureate of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2005. We will examine the development of his writing: from centering on relationships within a family unit to dealing with power enforcement by regime of oppression and/or conquest. We will discuss poetic principles in Pinter's plays that create an enigmatic and threatening affect. In addition, we will examine the power struggle between the playwright and critics of his work —the critics' responses to his work through different stages of his career, and the playwright's own role, and provocative conduct, in the shaping of his image as dramatist.
