Course description
Yehuda Halevi: Portrait of a Great Poet
The seminar will concentrate mostly on Halevi's poems which contain biographical clues. We shall try to follow his ideological development leading to his decision to leave Spain and go to Eretz Yisrael. We shall read both liturgical and secular poems including his famous 'sea poems', as well as some historical document, relating to his last year in Egypt. Occasionally we shall examine how ideas from the Kuzari are expressed in poetic forms.
