Course description
The last two decades of the 19th century mark a revolution in the history of Hebrew literature. While in 1880 it was still rooted in the sphere of enlightenment, twenty years later it re-emerged as a modern literary system, which gives a sophisticated expression to the Jewish experience in an era of an unprecedented historical change. Among the leaders and creators of this literary drama were S. Y. Abramovitz, M. J. Berdichevsky, David Frischman, Ahad Ha-Am, Reuven Breinin, H. N. Bialik and Shaul Tschernichovsky, to name only a few. The seminar will draw the outlines of this rich literary arena from various viewpoints (historical, geographical, poetic, thematic, biographical), leaning extensively on primary sources such as literary writings and documents, periodicals, letters and memoirs.
