Formation of Hebrew Poetry in Spain
In mid-10th century a new school of Hebrew poetry started to develop in Spain. It differed from the traditional Hebrew poetry in the East both in form, style and prosody. In class we shall examine the works of Dunash, Menahem, Ibn Kaprun and other poets who paved the way to the "Golden Age" of the Spanish school. We shall discuss the social and esthetic needs of this new center combined with the indirect influence of Saadia Gaon's ideology on the development of the Spanish school of poetry.
