Course description

The Gaze

What is a gaze? What kinds of gaze are possible? And why is it difficult to look at someone in length if he or she is looking at me in return? In this seminar we will try to understand the phenomenon of the gaze with the help of philosophical tools (Sartre, Benjamin), psychoanalytical tools (Freud, Lacan) and literary works (Hoffmann, Semprun). We will see that the mutual gaze is a limit-case and a threshold between two events. As such it is difficult to hold it beyond the moment in which the other is recognized as such, that is, as someone who is not only looked by me but is simultaneously also looking at me.
