Course description

This seminar will focus on a group of writers that emerged during the years of World War II and the struggle that preceded the War of Independence. They are known as “The 1948 Generation”, “The Palmah Generation”, “The Struggle-For-Independence Generation” and “Generation of the Land” (Dor Ba-Aretz), and their presence as a foremost leading group was felt in the literary arena at least until the beginning of the 1960s. Among the prominent figures that belong to this group: S. Yizhar, Moshe Shamir, Nathan Shaham, Aharon Megged, Hanoch Bartov, Haim Gouri and Amir Gilboa. The seminar will try to question and correct the rooted false image that portrays them as a uniform, conformist group, whose gray realistic works simplistically identify with basic Zionist beliefs and obeys simplified heroic models.
