Course description
S.Y. Agnon: Representing the Unconscious
The seminar will focus on the various and diverse ways in which the unconscious is represented in the works of Agnon. We will analyze both metaphorical representations (such as the dog in Only Yesterday, or the husband-devouring mistress in "ha'adonit ve'ha'rochel" etc.) and realistic ones (such as dreams, childhood memories, experiences of the uncanny etc. in realistic works). We will begin by discussing Agnon’s relation to psychoanalysis and proceed to study the stories and novel.
