"How is a Poem Conceived"? On Poetry and the Craft of Writing in Medieval Hebrew Literature
The Hebrew poets in the middle ages, who gave great importance to the occupation of writingand composing poetry, frequently wrote about the art of poetry and presented in their poems their viewpoint on the nature of poetry and the manner of composing a poem. While reading poems by the prominent poets of the Golden Age in Spain: Shmuel HaNagid, Shlomo Ibn Gabirol Yehuda HaLevi and others, we will demonstrate the poet's absolute faith in the power of the word, his attitude towards his written creations as well as his relationships with his surroundings. We will also discuss the contrast between the medieval conception of poetry and modern approaches via comparative reading of self-referential poems from earlier and later periods.
