Yehudit Hendel and Yehoshua Kenaz belong to the same biographical and literary generation. Their ground breaking literary oeuvre relates to closely connected issues. Blurring the (artificial) boundaries between the private and the public, it tells about strangeness, alienation, destruction and death in a social and political arena that aspires for revival and redemption. As such, their literary works realize an experience of disorientation that may be conceptualized in terms of Freud's idea of the Unheimmlich.
In the course we will read and discuss various short stories and novels by both authors, paying attention to their interconnectedness as well as to the unique poetics of each.
