The Poet, the Lover, the Devil: Introductions to German Literature
The course discusses foundational figures in the world of German literature around 1800: the poet (the artist), the clown and the wanderer, the soldier and the lover. The major work to be read in this framework is Goethe's Faust. Other works of concern are stories by Kleist, E.T.A Hoffmann, the Grimms, Novalis and Buechner, but also essays by Kant, Schiller and Friedrich Schlegel.
