The course will focus on the relationship between authors/narrators and readers as they are described and dramatised in postmodern works. We will examine the narratological phenomenon of direct addresses to readers and its implications on the reading process, using different theoretical perspectives (theories of interpellation, narratology, psychoanalysis, feminism, postcolonialism). The unique relationship created between author and reader will be portrayed through the lense of postmodern theories and in relation to historical moments that influenced and shaped it. Readings will include works of Hebrew and American literature: J. D. Salinger, Lorrie Moore, John Barth, Vladimir Nabokov, Jamaica Kincaid, Orly Castel-Bloom, Yoel Hoffmann, Lea Aini, and others.
Course requirements: attending classes and reading the materials. The grade will be based on the final paper.
