Course description
Confessional and Penitential Poetry – From the Hebrew Bible to Yehuda Ha-Levi
The course will focus on poems of confession and poems requiring penitence ranging from biblical times to the 12th century Golden Age of medieval Hebrew poetry. We will follow different aspects of the representation of sin and repentance, as well as rhetorical and poetic strategies of speaking to God meant to address man's weakness and at the same time request penitence. We will also read some key theoretical works regarding the relations of literature and ritual, confessional poetry, and poetry as performance.
