Course description
Wine Poetry and Ascetic Poetry in Medieval Al-Andalus
The course focuses on two of the main poetic genres in Hebrew medieval poetry: poems discussing the drinking of wine and the enjoyment of life, and poems which warn men from the world and encourage them to take on an ascetic worldview. We will read poems by poets Dunash Ben Labrat, Shlomo Ibn Gabirol, and others, in order to get acquainted with the conventions of these genres and also in order to view the ambivalence which these genres were met by the poets who wrote them. We will accompany the reading of poetry by the theoretical insights of Mikhail Bakhtin, especially his discussion of multiple voices and dialogism in literature.
