Course description
Psychoanalytic literary criticism had traditionally attributed to psychoanalysis the superior role of a well-equipped reader/analyst of the literary text. The first part of course will introduce the development of this initial conjunction between psychoanalysis and literature, from Freud's conceptualizations onward, demonstrate classical Freudian readings and discuss texts that center on and perform "psychoanalytic states". The second part of the course will be devoted to changes in the traditional relations of psychoanalysis and literature, in which psychoanalysis redefines itself on the basis of literary insights and terms.
