Course description
The “Yishuv”’s Security System: Disputes and Conflicts, 1907-1947
Establishment of security bodies in the first half of the twentieth century was an innovative phenomenon in Jewish history, after centuries in which Jewish people had no independent defense capability. The seminar will review and analyze these bodies, including the Bar Giora, “HaShomer”, the Jewish Legion, the “Haganah”, “Ezel” and “Lehi”. We will discuss the split in the “Haganah”, the “Patria” affair, recruitment to the “Palmach” or the Jewish Brigade, and the King David Hotel’s explosion.
