Course description

 

Building a Hebrew Nation

The purpose of this course is to portray the magnitude and quality of the nation-building process which led to the creation of the Israeli society from its inception in the late 19th century to the mid-1950s. Various fields will be discussed: from the emergence of Hebrew as a spoken language to the construction of the new Hebrew man and woman; from the evolution and inculcation of Hygiene practices to the role of sports; from the construction of new Hebrew settlements to the emotional relationship with the landscape and architectural design. The Israeli case will be explored while compared to other societies during the same time-frame.
